Santa Claus Around the World
Santa Claus is known by lots of different names around the world. He’s called Père Noël in France, Papai Noel in Brazil, Saint Nicolas in Belgium and in many places just Father Christmas. The name Santa Claus comes from the Dutch word for Saint Nicholas, Sinterklaas. The red and white suit that he wears is similar to that of the traditional Turkish bishop’s robes that Saint Nicholas wore. It is said that Santa Claus lives near the North Pole and flies through the sky on a sleigh pulled by reindeer. The most famous of his reindeer is Rudolph, whose bright red nose is supposed to help Santa see his way in the dark.
