Health and Medicine

Extract 1: I've treated all kinds of patients in my life, and some cases were really difficult. Some of my patients have been people who are very active and who believe in themselves, but who, despite all that, feel terribly stressed out. The reason for that is that they take on too much and want to be perfect at everything they do. In the end they feel unable to fulfill their dream vision of themselves and have a sense of failure. And they need me to tell them to stop worrying about being top in everything.

Extract 2: I've always looked after my health. I eat well, sleep enough, and exercise as often as possible. I don't get any headaches and I don't feel stressed out at all. Until last year I used to play water polo, but for some reason I grew bored with it. I needed to find some other activity. The choice was between working out in the gym and doing yoga, because that's what was on offer in my local health club. I didn't like the first option, so I was left with the other. It's quite fun actually.

Extract 3: Oh, Kate, you sound sick again. Have you been to the doctors yet? You know I don't do that unless I'm seriously ill. So you look for medical advice on the net, like most other people I know. Don't be silly. I'm not so irresponsible. I'd rather go to see my GP than find some unreliable advice on the net. I actually get in touch with my granny, who's got some wonderful and simple ideas to cure common colds. Her suggestions always work for me. Maybe you should share them on the net with others. Haha, very funny.

Extract 4: So how are you? Are you feeling better? Not really. I'm feverish and I've got a splitting headache. I've taken some painkillers but they aren't working. I don't think I can work today. I think I need to go home and just stay in bed. Will you be able to take over today? I've got just two surgeries planned for today. I think so. I've finished mine so I can deal with your patients. I'll let the nurse know that you're taking sick leave. Okay, thanks a lot. Get better soon.

Extract 5: A lot of my friends keep saying that I want to study medicine because it's my family tradition to be a doctor. However, it isn't the case. Neither is it because I think it's a fascinating profession. Just the opposite, it's a very demanding job. My real motivation is scientific. I dream of inventing a successful treatment for incurable illnesses to help millions of people in the world.

Extract 6: Are you worried before the operation? Yes, pretty much so. I know the surgeons here are good, but still, I'm afraid something may go wrong. If only I hadn't broken my arm so badly, I wouldn't need to be here. And you? Why are you here? You don't seem to have anything broken. They need to operate on me again. I sprained my ankle a few months ago, but it hasn't healed. So here I am again. Oh, poor you.
