Frequently Asked Questions

What is a letter requesting information?

A formal letter written to ask an organisation for details you cannot find yourself: about a course, a hotel, a job advertisement or an event. It explains what you already know, then asks precise questions about what is missing.

How do you open a letter asking for information?

With a phrase that names the subject straight away: "I am writing to enquire about..." or "I am writing to receive further information about...". Mentioning where you saw the advertisement or announcement in the same sentence tells the reader immediately what you are referring to.

How should the questions be organised?

Group them by subject and keep one topic per paragraph, or set them out as a short list. Numbered or grouped questions get complete answers, while a paragraph with four questions buried inside it usually gets a reply that answers only the first one.

How do you finish this kind of letter?

With a polite closing that makes a reply easy: thank the reader in advance, say you look forward to hearing from them, and sign off with "Yours faithfully" if you began with "Dear Sir / Madam". Sample letters and downloadable Word and PDF versions are included in the article.
