This or That Speaking Activities
This or That is a quick speaking game for pairs. Each page shows two pictures with captions: students choose one and explain why, using the phrase cards for Partner 1 and Partner 2. Build your own activity, browse the ones other teachers have shared, or open a random one for a warm-up.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does a This or That speaking activity work?
Students see two pictures with captions, for example tea or coffee, and each partner chooses one and explains why. The phrase cards for Partner 1 and Partner 2 give them ready language to start with, such as "I prefer ... because ...". Change pages with the arrow buttons or a swipe, and move on when both partners have spoken.
What level is This or That suitable for?
It works from beginners to intermediate learners, because the level depends on the pictures and phrases you choose. Young learners can simply name their choice with "I like ...", while older students justify it, compare the two options and ask their partner follow-up questions. The same pictures can be reused with more demanding phrase cards.
Can I run This or That with the whole class online?
Yes. Share your screen on a video call or open the activity in fullscreen on the classroom board, and call on pairs or individual students to answer. Because each activity has its own link, you can also send it to students to practise in pairs at home, where it opens on a phone and pages change with a swipe.
