Rule: Verb To Be ShowHide

am · is · are

  • I → am: I am ten. (I'm)
  • he / she / it → is: Peter is a pilot. (he's)
  • you / we / they → are: They are good students. (they're)

Negative

Put not after am, is or are.

  • I am not tired. (I'm not)
  • Vicky is not sad. (isn't)
  • They are not at school. (aren't)

Questions

Put am, is or are first.

The pen is blue. → Is the pen blue?
Are you ready? – Yes, I am. / No, I'm not.
Is she happy? – Yes, she is. / No, she isn't.

Two people together are they or we, so take are: Ann and Jack are doctors. Emily and I are friends.

1. Yes/No Questions:

  • Structure: To be (am/is/are) + subject + rest of the sentence?
  • Examples:
    • Am I late?
    • Is he a doctor?
    • Are they happy?

2. Wh- Questions:

  • Structure: Question word (who, what, where, when, why, how) + to be (am/is/are) + subject + rest of the sentence?
  • Examples:
    • Where are you from?
    • What is your name?
    • How old is she?
