  • I → am: I am ten. (I'm)
  • he / she / it → is: Peter is a pilot. (he's)
  • you / we / they → are: They are good students. (they're)

Negative

Put not after am, is or are.

  • I am not tired. (I'm not)
  • Vicky is not sad. (isn't)
  • They are not at school. (aren't)

Questions

Put am, is or are first.

The pen is blue. → Is the pen blue?
Are you ready? – Yes, I am. / No, I'm not.
Is she happy? – Yes, she is. / No, she isn't.

Two people together are they or we, so take are: Ann and Jack are doctors. Emily and I are friends.

Basic Structure:

  • Subject + "to be" (am/is/are) + not + rest of the sentence

Examples:

  • I am not tired.
  • She is not (isn't) happy.
  • They are not (aren't) going to the party.

Contractions:

  • It's common to use contractions in negative sentences with "to be":
    • am not = 'm not
    • is not = isn't
    • are not = aren't

Important Notes:

  • The negative form of "to be" always comes before the rest of the sentence.
  • Use "am not" with the pronoun "I."
  • Use "is not" (or "isn't") with singular subjects (he, she, it).
  • Use "are not" (or "aren't") with plural subjects (we, you, they).
