Present Simple or Continuous Jeopardy is a quiz board about the choice between the two present tenses. Twenty-five questions are split into five categories, and the price of a square says how hard the question behind it is: 100 is a warm-up, 500 makes the class think.

  • Time expressions – every day or right now: which tense does the expression belong to?
  • Present Simple or Present Continuous – put the verb into the gap in the right form
  • Negative – build the negative sentence word by word; some of the words are not needed
  • Questions – turn the sentence into a question the same way
  • Listening – hear a sentence and say which tense it is in

This is the easier of the two boards: every question is about the plain contrast between a habit and what is happening at the moment. The second board goes on to state verbs, adverbs of frequency and the less obvious uses of the two tenses. Play it in teams on the screen at the front of the class, or let students work through it on their own. Squares that have been taken stay crossed out; the Reset button starts the game again.

Leave it if you want an answer.
