Room on the Broom – Book Companion
A digital companion for Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson. Nine activities follow the story: the witch and her things, what happened on the way, the words of the book, a word hunt, sorting the words, questions about the story, the characters' lines, a retell of the whole story and irregular verbs in the past. Each one has a rabbit with a megaphone and a sentence frame – "The witch's hat is amazing", "The frog said it!" – so learners speak every time they answer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What level is the Room on the Broom book companion for?
Young learners at CEFR Pre-A1 to A1, roughly ages 5 to 9. The words come straight from the story – hat, bow, wand, broom, cauldron – and every task gives a short sentence frame to say out loud.
What is the rabbit with the megaphone for?
It marks the speaking step. Each task has a sentence frame such as "Hooray! I've found a ___!" or "If I'm not mistaken, it's true." Learners say it every time they answer, so each click turns into a spoken sentence.
Do I need the book?
Reading the story first helps, but the tasks also work as a warm-up before reading: the pictures introduce the witch, her animals, the dragon and the words of the book.
Do the activities work on phones and interactive whiteboards?
Yes. Words can be dragged or tapped, the label picture has its own phone layout, and the pages fit a classroom board.
What happens in the interactive retell?
The story is told again in twenty-four steps on one scene. Learners hear a sentence, then act it out – give the hat to the dog, put the frog on the broom, choose the dragon breathing fire – and the picture answers with a short animation before they retell the sentence themselves.
