Halloween Trivia | Halloween Quiz

A Halloween quiz for the classroom: questions about the origins of the holiday, its symbols and its customs, with time to guess before each answer. Works as a warm-up or as an end-of-lesson game in October.

A quiz works better than an explanation with this topic, because most students already half know the answers and are happy to argue about them. Where did Halloween begin? Why do people carve pumpkins? What was carved before pumpkins arrived? Which country gave the holiday to America?

Guessing first is what makes the facts stay. A class that has committed to an answer listens for the real one, while a class that is simply told the same facts forgets them by the next lesson. Give the question, take a show of hands, then reveal.

The language comes free with the format: I think it is…, maybe it is…, I am not sure but…, that cannot be right because…. Those phrases are worth more than the trivia itself, and they transfer to every other guessing activity in the year.
