At B1 and B2 the interesting part of Thanksgiving is not what is eaten but why the day persists. It is the busiest travel period of the American year, it survives in households with no religious attachment to it, and it has spread far enough that shops in countries with no Thanksgiving still hold a Black Friday sale.

Those facts make good discussion material: which of your own holidays would people travel across the country for, and what is actually being celebrated when the original reason has faded. The language that comes with it – gratitude, harvest, gathering, tradition, it is customary to – is the register these levels need, and it transfers directly to writing about traditions in an exam.
