What Bonfire Night is and why people across Britain celebrate it after dark on 5 November. A 3-minute video for A1–A2 learners, with a worksheet.
Bonfire Night is celebrated across Britain on the evening of 5 November, at organised displays in parks and at small fires in back gardens. It is not a day off: schools and offices work as usual, and everything happens after dark, which is part of why it feels like a proper occasion.
For an A1-A2 class the topic gives weather, time and place all at once – it is cold, it is dark, we stand outside, we watch the sky. Finish by asking students to describe a celebration of their own that happens at night, and the same vocabulary comes back in their own sentences.
