The Secret History of Halloween - Costumes, Pumpkins, Trick-or-Treat

Where the costumes came from, why a face is carved into a pumpkin every 31 October and what people carved before pumpkins, and how trick-or-treating actually started.

Children know exactly what to do on Halloween and almost nothing about why, which makes the history an easy sell. The video takes three customs in turn: dressing up, and the old belief the costumes came from; the jack-o'-lantern, including the vegetable that was carved before anyone used a pumpkin; and going door to door for treats, which began as something rather different from what it is now.

The explanations are short and the visuals carry them, so it works for younger learners as well as for an ESL class needing a culture lesson in October. Three and a half minutes, and it pairs with the Halloween vocabulary video for a full lesson.
