A Day in the Life of a Jillaroo - Australian Farm English

A jillaroo is a young woman training in station work on an Australian cattle farm. The video follows one working day from early morning, in short sentences a beginner can hold on to.

Most listening material about work stays in offices and shops. This one goes to an Australian cattle station, where a jillaroo - a young woman learning station work - starts before sunrise and spends the day with horses, dogs and livestock. The vocabulary that comes with it is the vocabulary of a working farm, which almost no coursebook covers.

The narration is slow enough for A1-A2 and the pictures carry most of the meaning, so students who miss a word still follow the day. It also opens an obvious speaking task: compare this working day with the one your students imagine for themselves, and the tenses take care of themselves.
