Picture Description

At B2 the picture is the easy part. The marks go to whoever can move from “I see a woman” to “This picture illustrates a carefree moment of…” – and keep going for a minute without drying up. Each page here gives you one short clip and the same set of ready-made openings: what draws your attention, where the scene takes place, what it is safe to assume, what the background features, what vibe the whole thing gives off.

Tasks

Describe What You See

The clips are real footage rather than photographs, so there is always something happening: a swimmer crossing clear water, a father saying goodbye at the school gate, three girls leaning over a birthday cake. Sixty-seven of them cover holidays, school, work, family, sport, the seasons and the two or three seconds of ordinary life that are hardest to put into words.

The phrases sit on a sheet next to the video, and one button takes the whole sheet away. Describe the clip on your own first; bring the sheet back when you get stuck. Level B2 – useful for Cambridge FCE speaking, IELTS Part 2 and any exam where you have to talk about an image without preparation.
