Create Your Own Open the Box Game

Build an Open the Box game box by box: write a question, a task or a word, add a picture, or turn a box into a surprise. Paste a whole list of questions at once, or start from a template for speaking, grammar and vocabulary practice. Try the game before you publish it, then share the link with your class or open it on the board.

1. Pick a template, or write what is inside each box: a question, a task, a word or a picture.
2. Add a surprise or two if you like: a bonus of 2 points or a lost turn.
3. Press Try it to play, then give the activity a title and publish it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many boxes can one game have?

From 2 to 30. Nine to twelve boxes fit well on a classroom board and make a 10–15 minute game; for a longer lesson, add more. Tick Mix the boxes every time the game opens if you want a new order for every class.

How do I add a lot of questions quickly?

Press Edit as a list and paste one question per line, or open a .txt file. Start a line with [bonus] or [lose] to make it a surprise box, and put | between two lines that should appear in one box. Pictures you have already added stay with their text when you change the list.

Are there ready-made Open the Box templates?

Yes. Press Start from a template to see them by topic and level, from A1 to B2: getting-to-know-you and free-time questions, Would you rather…?, opinion questions, Past Simple, Have you ever…? and future plans, vocabulary games and picture boxes. A template fills in all the boxes and surprises; change any of them before you publish.

Is Open the Box free, and do students need an account?

Creating, publishing and playing Open the Box games is free, and nobody needs an account. Publish the game to get a link, open it in fullscreen on the board or send it to students; it works in any modern browser on a computer, tablet or phone.
